Water pumps are generally used in most buildings to increase the flow of water. There are several kinds of pumps that are available in the market. One of them is the booster variety. As the very name suggests, booster pumps are used in places where the default water pressure is low and needs to be increased.

The fluid is introduced in the pumping chamber via priming. This is done in order to create the required pressure differential that is needed for pumping at a rated service. Self-priming pumps are also available. These pumps create and maintain sufficient vacuum level so that they can draw water into the inlet without any external help.

The most common application of the booster pump is in places where the water has a low contamination level. These pumps are used in commercial, municipal and even in the military arena. A wide range of industries such as aerospace, mining and food processing also make use of these pumps.

Quite contrary to what many people think, a booster pump is not just used in the transportation of water. These pumps can be used for carrying several other media as well. There are several pumps that make use of abrasive, corrosive, acidic, or even hazardous substances.

While some make use of abrasive material, there are others that make use of wastewater, salt water, sludge, or rendering wastes from food processing. The media in use keeps on varying as per the application of the pump. Gasoline, diesel, fuel, oil and lubricants are also used. To increase system pressure some pumps may even employ liquids, slurry or even liquid metal.

A booster pump can be made of various materials. Bras, bronze, cast iron, plastic and stainless steel are some common materials that are used for making booster pumps. There are various sources that are used to supply power to these pumps. Some common power sources are AC or DC voltage, gasoline, steam, and solar power.

Typically a booster pump comprises of a pump stator or a rotor assembly. Depending on the orientation of the media, this can be mounted wither vertically or horizontally. While a close-coupled pump mounts the pump end on the motor shaft, a frame mounted pump will mount it on a bearing frame that is coupled to the motor. 

Depending on which booster pump you choose to go in for, you shall be offered several optional features. While one booster pump may offer thermal overload protection, the other may be self-priming and can operate without the use of an external lubricant.

Multi stage booster pumps are also available. These pumps move the compressed fluid from its initial stage to stages with higher pressurization. This helps generate a high level of pressure. Single stage pumps are not able to offer such pressure.
